Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 20 (ANI): With Vaibhav Suryavanshi making a memorable debut for Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash against Lucknow Super Giants, former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar hailed the Pink franchise for unveiling a “new wonder boy”.
Suryavanshi, the youngest cricketer to play the IPL at the age of 14, kickstarted his career in the big league in the most memorable way possible, smashing a six on his first-ever delivery and playing a fiery cameo of 34 in 20 balls, with two fours and three sixes.
JioStar expert Sanjay Manjrekar said the young player impressed everyone.
“Just imagine–parents in their late 30s or early 40s watching this. It was unbelievable. His first two sixes came off good deliveries, and then he showed great maturity against the spinners. He impressed everyone. When he got out, it looked like he might cry–and at his age, that would have been completely natural. Full credit to Rajasthan Royals for trusting him, giving him the best possible platform at the top of the order, even with another left-hander alongside. They have truly unveiled a new wonder boy,” Manjrekar said in the ‘Match Centre Live’ on JioHotstar,
Ajay Jadeja, also a JioStar expert, said that in his 20-ball knock, Vaibhav showcased both his fearlessness and maturity.
“In those 20 balls, Vaibhav showed everything–fearlessness on the first ball, then maturity in how he paced his innings once Jaiswal took over. At 14, just being out there is huge, and to get 30-odd is remarkable. He was visibly upset after getting out, which shows how invested he was. That moment where he was beaten could be down to fitness, and I am sure he will work on it. What stood out was how quickly he bounced back–almost in tears when he got out, but back with the team an hour later. That ability to process emotions and move on will take him far,” he concluded.
Coming to the match, LSG won the toss and opted to bowl first. Half-centuries from Aiden Markram (66 in 45 balls, with five fours and three sixes), Ayush Badoni (50 in 34 balls, with five fours and a six) and a cameo from Abdul Samad (30* in 10 balls, with four sixes) took LSG to 180/5 in their 20 overs.
Wanindu Hasaranga (2/31) was the lead bowler for RR, who now need 181 to get their third win in eight matches.
During the run-chase, Yashasvi Jaiswal had an 85-run opening stand with debutant Vaibhav Suryavanshi (34 in 20 balls, with two fours and three sixes). The left-hander also went on to have a 62-run stand with stand-in skipper Riyan Parag (39 in 26 balls, with three fours and two sixes), and he made 74 in 52 balls, with five fours and four sixes. However, when the equation came down to nine runs in the final over, Avesh Khan (3/37) managed to defend it against Dhruv Jurel and Shubham Dubey, making RR face their sixth defeat by two runs.
RR is at the eighth spot with two wins and six losses, whereas LSG is at the fourth spot with five wins and three losses.
Avesh took home the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his fine knock. (ANI)
