Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], September 11 (ANI): Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Thursday hailed the historic speech delievered by Swami Vivekananda at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893.
September 11 marks the the solemn occasion of the 132nd anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s historic address.
In a post on X, Uttarakhand CM Dhami wrote, “On this very day in the year 1893, at the Chicago Parliament of Religions, Swami Vivekananda Ji delivered a speech that conveyed to the entire world the message of the greatness of Indian culture and Sanatan Dharma. His words not only established India’s spiritual heritage on the global stage, but also gave the whole world a wonderful message of tolerance, unity, and humanity. Let us all resolve to adopt the teachings and ideals of Swami Vivekananda Ji in our lives.”
Swami Vivekananda, born as Narendranath Datta in Calcutta on January 12, 1863, was the chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramhansa and advocated the doctrine of service, education, and spiritual upliftment.
In his Chicago speech, Vivekananda emphasised that religious pluralism is embedded in Hinduism. He also spoke against Sectarianism, bigotry, and fanaticism.
“I am proud to tell you that we have gathered in our bosom the purest remnant of the Israelites, who came to southern India and took refuge with us in the very year in which their holy temple was shattered to pieces by Roman tyranny. I am proud to belong to the religion which has sheltered and is still fostering the remnant of the grand Zoroastrian nation,” Vivekananda spoke at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared Swami Vivekananda’s historic address at the World Parliament of Religions at Chicago in 1893 and called it a “watershed” moment.
“This speech by Swami Vivekananda, delivered in Chicago on this day in 1893, is widely regarded as a watershed moment. Emphasising harmony and universal brotherhood, he passionately spoke about the ideals of Indian culture on the world stage. It is truly among the most celebrated and inspiring moments in our history,” PM Modi said. (ANI)
