Nashik (Maharashtra) [India], July 10 (ANI): A 36-year-old woman died after she was hit by a speeding car in Nashik, adding to a series of similar hit-and-run incidents that have been reported in the state recently.
A 51-year-old man has been taken into custody by the police in the incident, which took place on July 9, a Maharashtra Police officer said on Wednesday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Kirankumar Chavan said that the accused was driving in an inebriated state and the police have requested his custody from the court.
“Yesterday evening, under the Gangapur Police Station area, a woman died after she was hit by a speeding car. Police have registered a case of culpable homicide. A 51-year-old man was driving the car under the influence of alcohol…After lodging the case, the accused was taken into custody and produced before court. Further proceeding will begin now. The man was driving under the influence of alcohol. We will register various sections against him accordingly, including non-bailable ones. We have requested the court for the custody of the accused,” Chavan said speaking to ANI.
Meanwhile, in the July 7 hit-and-run case in Worli in which a 45 year old woman identified as Kaveri Nakhwa was killed, the Mumbai’s Sewri court has sent the main accused Mihir Shah, to police custody till July 16.
Shah was arrested from Virar on July 9 and brought to Sewri court in Mumbai today. Shah had been absconding after the car he was allegedly driving hit a scooter on Dr Annie Besant Road in Worli on July 7.
According to Mumbai police, the victim was a resident of Worli Koliwada. Her husband was riding the scooter while she was riding the pillion. The husband also sustained injuries in the incident.
Police said that the luxury car belonged to a leader of a political party based in Maharashtra’s Palghar.
On May 19 this year a luxury car allegedly driven by a 17-year-old youth, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, rammed into a motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of two software engineers in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar area.
Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed his “alarm” at the “rise in hit-and-run incidents” in the state and said that he has directed the police to take strict action against such cases, adding that the “guilty will not be spared.” The Shiv Sena also removed Rajesh Shah the father of the accused from the party following his arrest.
