Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], September 2 (ANI): As Telangana experiences heavy rainfall over the last two days, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stated on Monday that moderate rainfall is expected in the state on Tuesday.
“Moderate rainfall is expected in Telangana tomorrow. Rainfall is expected to decrease by the day after. The region has reported 35 per cent excess rainfall. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area has received moderate to heavy rains. Tomorrow, a low-intensity drizzle may continue in Hyderabad,” said Dr. A. Sravani, an IMD scientist.
The IMD reported that a low-pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal on August 30 and intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area by August 31, bringing widespread heavy rainfall to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
“Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh received a staggering 27 cm of rainfall, resulting in widespread flooding and inundation. In Telangana, Mahabubabad district recorded an impressive 40 cm of rainfall, while Khammam district received 24-27 cm. As many as 25 locations experienced extremely heavy rainfall, 126 received heavy rainfall, and 30 witnessed very heavy rainfall,” the IMD scientist added.
“Khammam district has been reeling under floodwater for the past two days, with the low-pressure system moving towards Kalinga Patnam and Jagdalpur. The depression is currently situated east of Vidarbha and may intensify into a well-marked low-pressure area within 12 hours. Telangana can expect significant rainfall, especially in Adilabad district, where a yellow alert has been issued,” she further noted.
Notably, the water level of the Munneru River has risen in Khammam’s Prakash Nagar in Telangana. Congress MP from Khammam, Ramasahayam Raghuram Reddy, reported that the floods have caused damage to houses and that people have been rescued.
“It’s not raining now, but the floods have damaged houses. People have been rescued, food relief has been provided, and rehabilitation work is also underway,” said the Congress MP.
Khammam District Collector Muzammil Khan described the floods as “unprecedented,” noting that such a situation had not been witnessed in the region for the last 30 years. (ANI)
