Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 5 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party’s West Bengal General Secretary Locket Chatterjee on Monday said that nobody wants division of West Bengal.
Speaking with ANI, Locket Chatterjee said, “We don’t want division of West Bengal. We want to make Bengal on the vision of Syama Prasad Mukherjee. We want West Bengal to be developed.”
Earlier in the day, with regard to the Centre’s reported move to include North Bengal in the northeast council, the West Bengal legislative assembly unanimously adopted a resolution against any kind of division of the state on Monday, the last day of the monsoon session.
The two-line resolution read, “We will protect any kind of division of the State at any cost.”
In the assembly during her speech on the resolution, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “We will not allow the partition of West Bengal.”
Earlier Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay including Minister Aroop Biswas, Dr Shashi Panja, Biplab Mitra etc. laid the motion under rule 185 regarding an attempt to divide Bengal. The BJP MLAs started protesting on the language of the motion that mentioned that the minister of state in the Modi govt wanted to include North Bengal in the northeast council implying a veiled approach to separate North Bengal from the rest of the state.
Leader of the opposition Subhendu Adhikari made it clear that the approach of the minister of state (Sukanta Majumdar) was to get a portion of the fund allocated for the northeastern states.
LoP Subhendu Adhikari said, “The central government has allocated 10 per cent of the budget for the development of the seven states of the northeast. If North Bengal is included in the northeast council then we can get the portion of this budget. There is no hidden interest of dividing the state.”
After West Bengal minister and TMC leader Akhil Giri said that he does not “regret” the remarks he made against a woman forest ranger, Chatterjee said, “This statement reflects egoism. Mamata Banerjee’s Minister is remarking on women and she is not saying anything about it. Even he had made remarks on the President of India Draupadi Murmu and Mamata Banerjee hasn’t said anything on it also.”
West Bengal minister and All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) leader Akhil Giri on Monday said that he does not “regret” the remarks he made against a woman forest ranger adding that TMC leader Mamata Banerjee will take cognizance of the complaint by the Forest department.
“I will not say anything. The party ordered me to resign from the cabinet, and I have tendered my resignation. I handed it over to the Chief Minister. I am a Member of the Assembly. This is the last day of the Assembly session. So, I am going there,” Giri told ANI.
Giri, who submitted his resignation under party pressure, refused to apologize to the official against whom he had made the abusive remarks.
Bharatiya Janata Party leader Soumendu Adhikari said that “atrocities and objectionable comments” against women have become a culture of the TMC.
“This is not the first time. Akhil Giri has made objectionable comments on our President (Droupadi Murmu) also. He should not have done that. The atrocities and objectionable comments on women have become TMC’s culture. They have said objectionable things about PM Modi and the Union Home Minister. It is their culture to threaten people,” Adhikari told ANI on Sunday. In a purported video of the incident posted on X by the BJP West Bengal, Giri was seen threatening an on-duty woman forest officer.
“West Bengal Minister Akhil Giri threatened a lady Forest Officer because she was performing her duty to remove illegal encroachment in forest areas. Will Mamata Banerjee dare to throw out this Minister and put him behind bars? Will charges be filed against him for obstructing government workers and outraging the modesty of women? Let’s see if this goon is kicked inside the jail for threatening to indirectly kill and outrage the modesty of a woman,” BJP West Bengal posted on X. (ANI)
